The scheme of Public Hearings, being implemented by the National Commission for Women, gives first-hand insight into the conditions of the women in their own surroundings. Under the Scheme, public hearings are organized on various aspects relating to women’s welfare and empowerment and the funds are provided to the NGOs working for women in various regions of the country to hold the hearings in easily accessible places where the complainants can come and speak for themselves. The Commission’s members record their depositions with a view to redressing their grievances as well as gain insight into their problems. The attendance of senior police officers, the District Magistrate, Secretary (Welfare) and others were ensured to witness for themselves the sufferings of poor women, who have been subjected to cruelty and humiliation.
