Women Safety Audit Survey

The National Commission for Women has initiated the Women Safety Audit Survey research in 20 tier II cities which is a study to evaluate the safety levels experienced by women in both public spaces and workplaces within the city, utilizing a combination of sample surveys, focused group discussions (FGDs), field observations and interviews. This research not only aims to identify factors contributing to inadequate safety but also to prepare a road map for creating safe inclusive urban spaces.

It is an exploratory research using mixed method approach to assess the safety and security concerns of women in public spaces and workplaces, taking into account the perspectives of the public, as well as insights from government officials and departments. The primary objective of this survey is to identify gaps in the physical and socio-economic environment of the city through a participatory approach and ensure safe public and work spaces for women so that women can participate in the society without any fear of intimidation or unwelcome behaviour. The data was collected online on the Women Stay Safe App developed by Digital India Corporation.

The Commission is conducting this survey research in collaboration with premium research Institutes. The first phase of the survey research has been completed in Ghaziabad, Vijayawada, Coimbatore, Raipur, Ranchi, Meerut, Asansol, Jodhpur, Aurangabad, Vasai Virar, Gwalior, and Faridabad. The data collection process is ongoing in Agra, Agartala, Gurugram, Indore, Varanasi, Jaipur, Ludhiana, and Thiruvananthapuram as part of the second phase of the survey research. Based on the data collected each city will be given a Women City Safety Score.
